Halloween can be a frustrating time to have braces as a teenager.  Nobody wants to have an orthodontic emergency like a broken bracket or bent wires from eating the wrong candy.  Fortunately knowing what kind of candy to avoid, as well as which candies are safe, can make this Halloween much easier.

hard candy is bad for braces

Chewy Candies

Starburst, Skittles, Tootsie Rolls, Airheads, jelly beans, gumdrops, and any kind of taffy are all braces worst enemy. Stay away from these.

Carmel

Whether it is soft or hard caramel will get stuck in your braces and damage your brackets.  Carmel or candy apples are also to be avoided.

Hard Candies

Jawbreakers, jolly ranchers, butterscotch candies, lifesavers, and others can break off brackets.

Licorice

Chewy licorice can cause brackets to tear off.  It also gets stuck in teeth and in the brackets easily.  The high sugar content in licorice can also contribute to tooth decay.

Candy with Nuts

Other risky types of candy to avoid are those that have any kind of nuts in them including Almond Joy, Snickers, Hershey’s with Almonds, Babe Ruth, Payday, and other nutty candies as well as caramel popcorn.

Fortunately, there are still many types of candy that you can enjoy with braces.  Stick to these choices Halloween night and your braces will thank you.

Pure Chocolate

Pass over chocolate with nuts and caramel and go for the pure chocolate. It’s easy to chew, won’t damage your braces, and is less likely to cause tooth decay than other options. Just about any brand of chocolate is okay: Hershey’s bars, Dove, plain M&Ms, Hershey’s Kisses and others are safe options.

Peanut Butter Cups

For those who like nuts, you can still enjoy them . . . in peanut butter form.  Peanut Butter cups will give you the nutty flavor without damaging your wires.

Mint Patties

Peppermint patties (including York and Junior Mints) are tasty, refreshing and are a good choice for braces wearers. Make sure you brush afterwards because they are loaded with sugar. As a bonus, they freshen your breath.

Kit Kat or Nestle Crunch

If you like a bit of crunch in your chocolate, Kit Kat or Nestle Crunch bars are great alternatives to chocolate bars with nuts in them.

With a bit of knowledge and planning, you can have Halloween candy (and eat it too) without the worry of an orthodontic emergency.

While the dentists at Apple Valley Dental Group do not assist with traditional braces, they do offer the Invisalign approach to teeth straightening, which can be a great alternative to traditional braces for many people and doesn’t involve the headache of knowing what foods to avoid.   Contact us today for more information.
