Over the next few weeks we will be sharing the top things that you can do to help keep your mouth healthy. Let’s get started with this series.
1. Listen to the Pros
A healthy mouth requires routine visits to the dentist. Checkups detect problems early and identify appropriate treatments. If your hygienist or dentist continue to remind you of the need to floss, there is a good reason! The areas between your teeth are prime real estate for cavities because they are not accessible to a tooth brush. In addition flossing is critical for gum health. Gum disease is so common and harmful to your overall health, that flossing is considered one of the top 5 daily activities essential to wellness.
2. Don’t Be Too Late
A lot of oral nightmares like periodontitis, oral cancer, and tooth decay don’t start to hurt until reaching severe conditions, so seek treatment before it’s too late. For example a tooth cavity will not cause pain until the decay has reached the deepest part of the tooth, the pulp. If caught early most cavities can be treated with a filling, but if it is too advanced a root canal and crown may be required. The old saying holds true, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
3. Beware of Acid!
Everyday your teeth are attacked by acid from the food and drink you consume. If these attacks go unchecked the enamel of your teeth wears away and decay sets in. The acid comes from the sugar in our food mixing with the bacteria in our mouth. In addition to brushing and flossing, your saliva naturally neutralizes the acid over time. However, if you are sipping a sweet drink throughout the day, your mouth can’t keep up. If you are consuming sugar do it in one sitting, rather than spreading it throughout the day.
